Recertification Requirements

CUOCP® certification is valid for a defined term and must be renewed to remain active.

Recertification ensures credential holders continue to demonstrate ongoing professional engagement, ethical accountability, and alignment with NACUP standards in regulated utility environments.

Purpose of Recertification

Recertification is designed to ensure that CUOCP® credential holders:

  • Remain actively engaged in utility operations, capital programs, or leadership roles

  • Continue to exercise sound professional judgment in evolving regulatory and operational environments

  • Uphold NACUP’s standards for ethics, accountability, and public trust

  • Maintain relevance as industry conditions, technologies, and regulatory expectations change

This model reflects the reality that leadership competence must be maintained, not assumed.

Acceptable Professional Activity

To qualify for recertification, credential holders must demonstrate ongoing professional involvement, which may include:

  • Continued employment in utility operations, capital delivery, engineering leadership, or asset management

  • Leadership responsibility for operational, capital, safety, or regulatory decision-making

  • Participation in industry committees, working groups, or professional forums

  • Internal leadership development, governance roles, or oversight responsibilities

NACUP does not mandate specific courses or training hours.
Recertification is based on professional engagement, not classroom attendance.

Recertification Process

  1. Credential holder submits recertification application prior to expiration

  2. Attestation of continued professional activity and ethical standing

  3. Payment of recertification fee

  4. NACUP review and approval

  5. Credential status extended for an additional five-year term

NACUP reserves the right to request additional documentation or conduct audits as necessary to protect credential integrity.

Lapsed Certification

Credential holders who fail to recertify by the expiration date:

  • Lose active certification status

  • Are removed from employer verification systems

  • May be required to reapply or retest, subject to NACUP policies at the time of reentry

Recertification Model

  • Recertification cycle: Every five (5) years

  • Recertification fee: $395

  • Continued professional activity required

  • No automatic lifetime status

Failure to recertify results in credential expiration and removal from active verification listings.
