CUOCP® Credential Verification Guide for Employers

Official credential verification: verification@nacup.org

The Certified Utility Operations & Capital Professional (CUOCP®) credential is an independent, exam-based professional certification administered by the North American Council of Utility Professionals (NACUP).

This page provides employers, hiring managers, and third parties with official guidance on how to verify CUOCP® certification status.

Purpose of Credential Verification

Credential verification allows employers to independently confirm that an individual:

  • Successfully passed the CUOCP® examination

  • Holds an active CUOCP® credential in good standing

  • Has not had their certification suspended or revoked

Verification supports informed hiring, promotion, and professional development decisions without reliance on self-reported claims.

What the CUOCP® Credential Represents

CUOCP® certification signifies that an individual has demonstrated applied professional judgment across utility operations and capital program leadership environments through a rigorous, proctored examination.

The credential is:

  • Exam-based

  • Asset-agnostic (electric, gas, water, infrastructure)

  • Independent of employer training programs

  • Non-regulatory and voluntary

CUOCP® complements — but does not replace — licensure, employer qualification programs, or regulatory requirements.

How to Verify a CUOCP® Credential

Official Verification Process

Employers may verify CUOCP® certification status through NACUP’s official credential verification process.

  • Credential title (CUOCP®)

  • Certification status (Active / Expired / Revoked)

  • Initial issue date

Acceptable Verification Documentation

CUOCP® credential holders may provide:

  • A digital CUOCP® certificate (PDF)

  • Credential verification confirmation from NACUP

Employers should rely on NACUP’s official verification response rather than screenshots, resumes, or third-party profiles.

Certification Validity & Status

CUOCP® credentials are issued for a defined certification cycle and are subject to NACUP’s recertification requirements.

Credential status may be:

  • Active – Credential is valid and in good standing

  • Expired – Credential holder has not completed recertification

  • Revoked – Credential has been withdrawn due to policy or ethics violations

NACUP reserves the right to update credential status at any time in accordance with published policies.

What Verification Does Not  Confirm

Credential verification does not confirm:

  • Employment history

  • Job performance

  • Regulatory authorization

  • Licensure or statutory qualifications

  • Employer-specific training completion

CUOCP® certification should be evaluated alongside other professional qualifications.

Use of the CUOCP® Credential by Employees

Credential holders may reference CUOCP®:

  • On resumes

  • On professional profiles (e.g., LinkedIn)

  • In internal promotion or development discussions

Credential holders may not imply:

  • NACUP endorsement of an employer

  • Regulatory approval

  • Authority beyond the scope of the credential

Improper use may result in credential review or revocation.

Credential Audits & Integrity

NACUP maintains ongoing oversight of credential integrity and may:

  • Audit credential status

  • Investigate misrepresentation

  • Suspend or revoke credentials where appropriate

This ensures employers can rely on CUOCP® as a credible professional benchmark.
